CASE STUDY

Working with James as my podcast editor has been a fantastic experience. James is open to ideas and often suggests his own creative solutions, making our episodes sound professional and polished.
— Olivia Mancuso, host

Having worked with Olivia on marketing projects before, I knew her to be a total pro at crafting a story. When she asked if I'd help her launch her new electronic music podcast, I was thrilled.

First, we created an intro sequence using carefully curated stock footage, episode footage, and custom effects. Theme music is always important — especially so for a show about music, so we picked out a hard-hitting tech house track that would establish legitimacy to a discerning audience.

I created a looping background and lower thirds at launch, and have added other graphics as needed to maintain a consistent visual identity for the show.

Every show has its own style and flow. This informs how I edit, including what I cut or leave in. With Elevated Frequencies, I maintain the natural conversational flow that Olivia established in the interview by keeping thoughtful pauses and some filler words.

WHAT DOES A PODCAST EDITOR DO?

When I edit a podcast, I’m doing a lot more than just cutting out mistakes and reducing background noise. When we get started working together, I’ll interview you on the vision and goals you have for your show until I understand it deeply. I’ll offer suggestions for improving audio and/or video quality, ideas for show structure and best practices, and try to answer any other questions you may have. Then, for every episode, I’ll tune in to the flow of the script or interview and do my absolute best to help illuminate it.

SHOULD I HIRE A PODCAST EDITOR?

Many podcasters start out editing their own show. You can accomplish a lot with free software and YouTube tutorials! However, a time may come when editing becomes a burden that takes the focus away from finding your next guest or researching your next topic — at that point, it may be wise to hire an editor.

HOW MUCH DOES A PODCAST EDITOR COST?

The cost of editing your show will vary depending on the specifics of your show — however, you can get a rough estimate using the following base rates: $4 per minute of unedited audio for audio-only podcasts and $6 per minute of unedited footage for video podcasts.
